It’s Wednesday: Chili while Chilly

by Nov 9, 2016

It is the middle of a frigid week in the Palmetto State, the election is behind us, and Cambodia celebrates its Independence Day. On this day in history, the Pilgrims aboard the mayflower spotted the coast of Cape Code, Massachusetts in 1620, a blackout spanning 13 hours occurred in the same area 300 years later, and Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. The world is a beautiful and profound place, so get out there and enjoy it! To help you with that, I have organized and stored a variety of upcoming events in the great, virtual storage container called the internet (or more specifically, this blog I guess). Below are some upcoming happenings in Columbia, Greenville, and Charleston on Saturday that are sure to help you unwind from the post-election drama!

Midlands – 5ks, Chili Love, and Good Music
Get geared up with some (warm) running pants and a sweet pair of neon tennis shoe laces for the 2nd annual Palmetto Warrior’s Spirit 5k and Military/Veteran Family Appreciation Day going early Saturday morning on November 12th at American Legion Post 6. Early entry fees are in the $20 range and include complimentary food, beverages, and music as well as a vendor fair for the sponsors involved. The website describes the course as “moderately fast,” so go in with that expectation. Registration is happening now, so sign up and get your t-shirt!

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head down to Five Points for the 29th Annual Chili Cook Off and warm your bones with the Chili recipes of almost 50 teams, competing head to head to impress a panel of 10 judges. Chef registration is open, so if you think you have what it takes, head over to their website to sign up. For people that are not so into Chili, there will also be several food trucks onsite for your pleasure. Entry is free, so bring some friends and stuff yourself for hibernation!

From noon until late evening, cool down from an event filled day with the Jam Room Music Festival featuring 12 artists and groups located smack-dab in the middle of downtown Columbia. With a variety of music from Fall of an Empire to Mountain Goats, the day is sure to be exciting with activities for all ages. It is completely free to get in and refreshments are sold at the festival. Move over to Main and Hampton Streets for an exciting, and distinctly South Carolinian, experience.

Upstate – Relay, Boot Camp, and 5k for Autism Awareness
On Saturday morning, sign up for one or all the events organized by the HOPE foundation, dedicated to bringing awareness and assistance to those affected by Autism. The HOPE 20k Run Relay involves a 4-person team (or up to 4 members) running 3.1 miles individually, exchanging slap bracelets between teammates as each segment of the relay is completed. At 8:50, The Boot Camp 5k begins. Teams must run the course loop and complete 5 activity stations along the way. Between 9:00 and 9:40, the HOPE 5k begins as an event in which participants can run as a team or individually. Run to compete or to have fun; either way, you are supporting a great cause.

Low Country – The Glory of Rome, Smokey BBQ, and fun on Daniel Island

Rome never fell and, oddly enough, the proof is in Summerville with the Castra Romana: a historically-minded look at different aspects of Ancient Roman life. For a $2 park entry, you can celebrate the political successes of Caesar with several events, Roman food, and Gladiator matches for your viewing pleasure (those who are not entertained have the option to participate themselves, but you must be 18 years of age!). The Roman legions have moved their influence to the coasts of the New World, and you can be a part from November 9-12.

The ability to cook and eat BBQ are talents held with pride in the Palmetto State. Show some pride this Friday and Saturday with the Smoke on the Harbor BBQ Throw down, an event consisting of many different competitors and vendors dedicated to serving you the best chicken wings and pork butts in the Carolinas (and possibly the whole world). There will be plenty of refreshments along with live music and a kid zone (as well as free entry for the little ones). General admission is $10, but you can receive $5 off if you bring along 5 canned good items to benefit the Low Country Food Bank. The event is at Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, so head over and get your hands dirty and bring a few of those cans you have stored away!

On Saturday morning, come to Children’s Park for Park Day on Daniel Island, a Low country tradition that hosts activities for the entire family, all in the support of local charities. The website gives you a little taste of what is in store at the event:
“In addition to live entertainment, games, jump castles, animal exhibits and other favorite activities, this year’s festival will also feature a Food Truck Rodeo, a sports pub tent including Big Screen TV’s t to watch all of your favorite college football games and much, much more.”

Gather the family around and enjoy local kinship with your Southern community!
