Storing Your Belongings for Cold Weather

by Jan 21, 2020

When it’s cold, we beat the season by wrapping ourselves in warm clothing and turning on the heat. But for the things in your living space, it’s a different story. When the temperature drops, items are also affected by colder weather, and often for the worst, which means you need to not only keep yourself warm, but your belongings too. This is especially the case for electronics or other sensitive equipment. To help, Mobile Attic has a few solutions for proper storage in cold weather.

1 – Avoid Windows and Openings

Wherever cold air can leak into your business or home are points to avoid when putting things away. Even if you’re setting aside your phone for a moment, this cold air can affect objects left exposed to it for an extended period. You can counteract some of this by opening your blinds to allow for sunlight, or place insulation material around windows to shield against cold weather.

2 – Put Items in Proper Containers

Depending on the items in question, they should be stored in containers which protect against cold. This isn’t necessary for all items, but anything that cold can seep into should be protected against. If you’re having trouble finding the right kind of container, you can also put storage away with insulation.

3 – Use Insulation

We’ve mentioned insulation a few times, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Sheets, blankets, even towels work well. These extra layers will protect against cold and freezing temperature drops.

It’s worth noting, if you’re putting away electronics, be sure the insulation doesn’t cause static. Static causes damage to electronics and it’s not a welcome surprise after you retrieve things.

4 – Avoid Cellars and Attics

Though the basement, cellar, and attic are generally spacious, putting items away here for colder seasons can be a problem. These environments may not be insulated, meaning just as with windows, freezing air can creep in and damage your valuables. Unless you know for certain your attic and basement will be kept at warm enough temperatures, avoid them.

5 – Mobile Solutions

You can also invest in mobile storage and mobile pods. These options come directly to your place of business or residence and can be moved to warmer, safer locations. This is especially useful if you don’t have the required space to stow inventory away.
